How to Change your Current Run Level and Default Run Level

Ever notice that your Server system is running the GUI and you want to save resources, let turn it off

Changing your Current Run Level

init [0-6]

The default server installation should be

init 3

Change your Run Level on Boot up

vim /etc/inittab

Change it so it has

id:3:initdefault:

If you have a GUI it should be set to 5

Runlevels

0 – halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)

1 – Single user mode

2 – Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have networking)

3 – Full multiuser mode

4 – unused or Admin

5 – X11

6 – reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
